One problem could be in your design of a custom Behavior class. In the Java3D tutorial part 4.2.2, there is a section entitled: Behavior Class Design Recommendations. In it it mentions how to correct a problem with those symptoms. Basically it explains 'Memory burn' and says to "replace the use of the new with code that reuses an object."
