Thank you all for the feedback on this problem. The problem did indeed
exist for 'ogl_install_check' as well, and Kelvin's 'gamma correction'
suggestion fixed the problem very nicely. The gamma value of 1.0 giving
me a close match to what I see on my PC, and also to what I consider to
be 'correct' i.e. where my textures rendered via Java3D closely resemble
what the original textures look like when viewed in GIMP.

Thanks to you all for your help on this not-strictly-Java3D problem -
I'm now a very happy person as this issue has been annoying me since I
acquired my SunBlade 4 weeks ago.
