I think the main reason for this, is that there is no documentation
for it free available. And there are so many MAX-Format Versions now
(R1,R2,R3,R4,R5) which all have some significant changes. Even when you
look at most of the 3D-Fileformat-Converter out there (PolyTrans,
DeepExploration) they all require that 3DStudio Max is installed. Which is
a good sign that it is more difficult to convert.

But yesterday I noticed a strange behaviour with StarFire's 3DS Loader,
sometimes when an Object has more than one material three or
four (surfaces) I get holes in the Geometry when showing the loaded 3DS
file in J3D.
