Hello,
We've been using Java3D to build Collaborative Virtual Environments for
the past 2-3 years. See some of the demos at:

http://www.discover.uottawa.ca/demos/

Within our experience with Java3D, we haven't had any problems with
regards to Java3D's rendering performance but we do not use very large
data sets. I don't want to write a long email about our experience (i'd
be happy to discuss them in private emails) but I can mention two points
that may be of concern:
a) we have found current Java3d loaders to be quite slow (in loading
from a file to Java3D scene) but this is a problem with the loader and
not Java3D and also we haven't tested all loaders (such as Xj3Dloader)
b) 3d content with lots of textures can sometimes be rendered slowly in
Java3D. This is a very vague statement and we haven't had the time to
see why this is (we simply got rid of 'unnecessary textures')
