Re: MicroSoft forced to ship current Java?

Judge Likens Microsoft To Tonya Harding
---------------------------------------
| The federal judge overseeing Sun Microsystems'
| request for an injunction against Microsoft Corp.
| compared the software giant's treatment of Sun to
| Tonya Harding's knee-capping attack on rival figure
| skater Nancy Kerrigan.
|
| U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz,
| thinking aloud from the bench, said
| there was a 'social value' in being able to
| participate fairly in a market
| undistorted by a competitor.

Microsoft ordered to carry Java
--------------------------------
| Sun wins preliminary injunction in private
| antitrust lawsuit Dec. 23 —
|
| A U.S. district court judge on Monday
| ordered Microsoft to include Sun Microsystems’
| version of Java with the Windows operating system,
| citing the software giant’s history
| of undermining the platform-neutral programming language.
| ...
| Andrew Gavil, a professor at Howard University
| who has followed the antitrust case closely,
| said that Judge Motz might have issued the
| injunction in part because he was persuaded by
| one of ___ Microsoft's major arguments ___
| before both himself and Judge Kollar-Kotelly:
| that it is impossible to measure whether nascent
| technologies like Java and Netscape would have
| evolved into a serious competitor to Windows. ...
|
| The ruling may also signal how Judge Motz may
| lean in a case he is overseeing filed by
| Netscape Communications, now owned by AOL Time Warner.
| The judge is also handling cases filed by Be Inc.
| and Burst.com, as well as cases filed by
| class-action lawyers suing on behalf of consumers.

comp.lang.java.advocacy has much discussion of the ruling.

Web3d.org's VRML based H-Anim Avatars can be animated
in a browser ( Mozilla, Microsoft's Internet Explorer etc. )
with Java3d using the Sun VRML Loaders with Sound and
Gesture Animations triggered by user mouse actions on
TouchSensors without certificates on Windows and Linux
with Current & Compliant Java VMs ( I'm not sure about the
combination of Explorer on Linux, I've seen it but it
isn't a popular combination ).

Java3d & VRML works in a browser with Current & Compliant Java VMs
