Well, I don't know why Mr. Flavin is so furious. Was it a former employee of

Nope. Never even met the guy. He's never shown up to anything involving
VRML like conferences, exhibition days or anything. As far as myself and
all my friends in the VRML community are concerned, nobody even knows
what he looks like. For all we know, it's just a bot that's gone nuts.

Unfortunately the guy lost the plot a long time ago. When he first
joined www-vrml in late 98 he was mildly amusing and somewhat helpful
(his posting style hasn't changed let me guarantee you that!). Then one
day he just flipped. Suddenly everyone was involved in a conspiracy
theory of one form or another. I just happen to be the current fixation.
It used to be ParallelGraphics (a Russian company) out to subvert the
world and were Microsoft lackeys, and then it was Blaxxun, and then
something else, which I can't remember the details of. After the 3rd
one, that's when he got evicted from all the Web3d.org maintained lists.
Apart from being completely annoying he was falsifying stuff, quoting
it out of context and in general making extremely derogatory comments
about the various companies. Things obviously haven't changed as you can
see by the emails that waft through here every so often. Unfortunately,
the guy has lost the plot mentally from what I can tell. He's turned
into a pathalogical liar to support his course, and obviouslly is not a
programmer by any stretch of the imagination. For example, here's a few
things that he's stated that have no grounding in reality:

- That I wrote or am somehow responsible for Aaron's Core Web3D book. I
put together an outline of a chapter on VRML (not Java3D) for him that
never got used. That is far as my involvement went, yet somehow I've
turned into a co-author or something. To set the record straight -
Sun's Doug Twilleager was the person doing the tech editing of the book
and ensured the accuracy of the technical content. But, having a Sun
employee and the architect of Java3D being the tech edit of the
supposedly misleading sections obviously doesn't suit his purposes so he
changes the fact.

- Sun loader support for various nodes. Let's start with the obvious
one: MovieTexture. Haaaaaaahhhaaahaahahahahaha. Yeah right. MovieTexture
support requires that there be code written (and in particular JMF to do
the decoding of the raw streams). The mere existance of an otherwise
empty file does not mean it supports movie textures. If his code does
support it, it's because he's written it himself and is not in the
previously downloadable form - it's certainly not in the CVS version of
the code. Given his other completely inept comments like quoting the
header of a file for something that he claims support for without
actually managing to read the file, I certainly doubt he's got the
ability to do so.

- Unacknowledged use of copyrighted works. I believe one of the reasons
why he's pissed at Matt Beittler is that Matt's prof has considered
copyright infringment proceedings against Flavin due to the use of some
of their images from their site, without any acknowledgements. If you
look closely at some of the images on his site, particularly ones where
it is supposedly running in a Java application, you'll notice the same
images reproduced there - hence the Photoshop remark in one of my other
replies.

- In ability to comprehend English. Obviously that goes without saying
as cliche's, sarcasm and actual understanding of the words as written
seem to be beyond his ability to understand. Just looking at the
archives recently and noticed that he obviously can't tell the
difference between us helping someone who doesn't have their environment
set up correctly and an actual bug in the software.
