OK, I dont have SMP on my machine, and Im wondering if anyone has used
java3d on a multi-processor setup. As far as I understand J3D is written to
take advantage of MP, and XP and 2000 are supposed to be fairly good
(perhaps that should just be "better") at it.
Is the system more responsive when rendering and loading objects for
example. Currently my program is prone to stutters - it takes about 1/4
second to load the objects when they are running on their own.
Justin has one(lucky SOB) so he might comment...
1/4 second dosent sound much, but it does detract from the experience more
than you might expect.
We've been debating how to handle this for Xj3D when loading the initial
world. On concept we have would be to throttle the renderer till all
the textures/objects are loaded. This has a nice effect of really
speeding the loading of extra objects. Right now we've just throttled
the renderer to about 30 FPS. In the end I think we might start at 5
FPS and then shift to 30-60FPS once all external files are loaded.
