What happens when you run the Java3D compatibility test on
http://jdraw3d.herinean.com ? If there are any problems, you should see a
small report of jdk / j3d versions.

I had the same problem as you described when clicking those java3d applet 
links. And I have java2 1.4.1 andjava3d 1.3 on win2000 machine. At one time 
I re-downloaded the java Plug-in and was able to run the applet once. And 
then I had the same problem with other java3d applets again. I still have 
not figured out what is wrong. What is worse is currently when I run any 
java applet, the browser pops up and disappears in a second. I un-installed 
and re-installed the browsers but did not fix the problem.

I posted the question earlier but got no response. I thought that I was the 
only one having the problem. If you find any solution, please post it to 
this list. Thanks!
