Hello all,
I installed sdk1.4.1 + java3d1.3 openGL 1.2.2 in my computer (Solaris 8 box), but I can't run any demo program now. When I executed the program, I get the followed message.
I connect to my Solaris 8 box through vncclient software.
Graphic card used: PGX64 8/24-Bit Color Frame BufferPGX64 8/24-Bit Color Frame Buffer.
Searching with reference to this problem in related websites it seems I need to change the graphic card with a frame buffer supporting 32 bits.
Can any of you please shed your experience in this and help to solve this problem?
1)Suggest me a good graphic card for Solaris 8? 2)I’m using remote accessing software’s like(xserver,vnclient..etc) to connect my solaris box. Does this concern rendering in java3D?
Mark replied already with good OGL and J3D info.
Maybe I can help on the VNC side.
When you connect to an Xvnx server (unix:1.0) running on solaris with a VNC client running anywhere you aren't using the video board in the solaris box at all. On UNIX (all UNIX not just Solaris) VNC doesn't copy the actual main desktop out to the viewer like it does on Windows. Instead it creates a new virtual desktop in RAM to display to the viewer - This also allows you to have as many VNC servers as you want on the Solaris machine (:2,:3,...,:99, etc.)
The only way to have Java3D use the video board in your Solaris machine is to sit at the console (monitor and keyboard) of that solaris machine.
I have a PGX64, and I have used it with J3D, I don't remember the results being spectacular, but I don't remember it being that painful either (at least for my small app.)
The main point is, if you must use VNC, then it doesn't matter which Sun (or third party) card you get, none of them will add any magic that will allow J3D to run under VNC.
