To get the version info from the commandline, I usually run the
JAVA_HOME/demo/java3d/PackageInfo/QueryProperties.java
program.

This also gives you a whole bunch of other useful info.
However, I wonder if the version info printed out would also
indicate if it is a beta or an FCS.
