I agree, the mixed signals are getting frustrating. Around the time we heard that Java
3D 1.4 was being put in a holding pattern, Clark Masters, the Sun Exec VP for
Enterprise System Products (high-end servers), was quoted as follows in an interview
on High Performance Technical Computing in the May 26th issue of eWeek:
"It's (HPTC) very important to Sun up and down the product line....We're developing
visualization technology like Java 3D, for example. That's big in the research and
technical computing area. We're finding that technical computing has much more growth
potential and is becoming much more integrated with most every organization..."
Not that the left hand talks to the right hand at Sun, but it would seem that HPTC
technologies like Java 3D are strategic for Sun's future. Even IBM has gotten past the
mental block that software is only useful for selling hardware...

Subject: [JAVA3D] To any SUN officials out there
Hi all,
I've been listening to the list for some time.I think it's time some sun
official explained what exactly "in holding pattern" means , how long will
it be Java3D in holding pattern what are SUN's plans for the future of
Java3D , if any.And what exactly is SUN part in the game projects at
java.net.From the posting in the list I see that most of us don't have a
clue about what is going on and it's time for you guys to sort this mess
out.I hope that at least some of the Java3D team are members of this list
and will give us some solid information.
Thank you,
Ivan
