Are you using Java3D OpenGL or DirectX? For this old card the I guess the best option is Java3D DirectX. Some time ago I was running Java3D in a Trident 9680-2MB, slowly, but running, ... But a accelerated vcard helps a lot ! There are some good and cheap video cards today. Choose at least a GForce2 MX400...
