Very strange...
I will give more tips. Try each one with Java3D demos:

* set color depth to 32 bits;
* use Java3D DirectX with -Dj3d.debug=true to see debug output for
directX version;
ex.:
java -Dj3d.debug=true HelloUniverse

* try Java3D OpenGL;
* unistall, reboot (!) and install (or reinstall) new video card drivers;

btw , what is your video card ??

I was using directx 9.0a... Microsoft did not have 8.1a, but I did
install
8.1 No change.. program runs fine but my object doesn't show up. I have
tried other j3d progs all same thing. Video card is configured and
working
properly... 16bit color, proper drivers, etc. Any other ideas? OS is
Win98.

1) check video card drivers.
2) If you are using J3D DirectX version, use DirectX
8.1a.
