Maybe you should make sure that your Graphics Card is using the correct driver for the monitor you're currently using.
Most Graphics Cards software come now with a list of supported drivers for most popular monitors.

My java 3d code runs well in windows 2000. After I switched to windows xp I got the following error:

 

No compatible device found, please switch to other display mode and try again
