There was also the Java3D portfolio from the NCSA also this was easy to find, but used plain sockets, not RMI. Alas, it was removed from the web, not even to be found again on Sun or j3d.org websites.
I think this is time to think to update the Java3D core with a network layer. It would also be nice to have someone to host the NCSA portfolio. In the meantime, I'll send you my copy should you need it.
