Wonder if I'm that statistical anomaly ! I was probably the first to give
1.5 a shot because I was deperately hoping that a memory leak that I was
battling at the time it was released would simply go away.

My apps. have no 1.5 specific code, and they seem to work just fine with 1.5
except probably for an apparently slower mouse response. My driver is nvidia
53.04, I use -source 1.5 and -target 1.5, and Java 3D 1.3.1.

You may just want to try out one of the Java 3D demos, which have no 1.5
specific features, to see if it makes a difference. TBH, I'm still sticking
with 1.4.2_03 for other reasons.
