Depending on what they are studying: 1) a simple physics engine (whith realistic demands) 2) "better" algorithms to intersect or unite 3D closed forms (send me a copy) 3) let the students propose projects 4) first person shooter as a group project (world design, animation design, level design, story board, physics, play mechanics, functional design, technical design, API's) 5) 3D interior design tool
all can be group projects, in my opinion one of the most important parts of learning to be a programmer is learning to work in group projects. By the way, are these projects for students to prove what they have already learnt or for them to learn new skills?
