shadowing generally comes from 
the renderer doing ray-tracing...
as an old PoV-Ray hacker I can attest that
this takes forever to paint each frame  ;^}

there are a number of approaches to
fooling the user's eye/brain into perceiving 
shadowing where there really isn't any...

for example
a number of games pre-build the shadowing
into the game's texture maps
because they know ahead of time
that the possible/probable user viewpoints
are constrained
