TextPad is an approximation of what you're talking about.  You can do just
about anything you would in DOS from it, and build "tools" (sorta like shell
scripts) out of such commands.  I find it pretty handy.   (Haven't tried
Kawa yet though.)  It's macro editor is really nice.  If someone would just
write some Java clip libraries for it, the way they have them for HTML and
Javascript, then we'd really be in business.
