One format you may want to look into is STEP, I haven't done much research
on it, but I've heard it is a lot less buggy than IGES.
Believe me, I'm speaking from experience. The automotive industry has, for
many years, been using IGES to share data from the OEM's to suppliers (I
work at a supplier).
IGES has caused us so much trouble that we are currently in the process of
replacing our "generic" CAD system to a high end system capable of using
native files from each of our customers rather than going through the IGES
process.
The IGES spec doesn't provide for a consistent format, you run into
"flavors" of IGES files.
IGES allows settings to be made when the file is written that affects how
the data is translated at the other end. If the end user doesn't know what
those settings were he can have a lot of trouble if not an impossible task
when he tries to use it.
And with so many software applications floating around with different
settings or "flavors" generating files which require different translation
settings to be used, I think you'll find you'll find it will always give you
trouble.
What can end up happening is you can get data from someone that will work
out fine, and then get something from another source that will result in
buggy data, or a corrupt translation all together.
Anyway, there's another two cents worth.........
