Inconsistent polygon winding is a common culprit for this sort of problem;
make sure all your front-facing polygons are wound counter-clockwise, as
clockwise polygons are considered back-facing and are culled by default.

You can verify if this the problem by calling setCullFace(CULL_NONE).  This
method is a member of the PolygonAttributes object associated with
Appearance node components.
