I thought it was the other way around.  The "unmount" is a property of
all USB disk drives.  When you ipod is not in "manual manage
mode" (which by default, it's not), you don't need to unmount it
before unplugging it.  I would have thought that non-ipod devices
suffer from this.. but i dont know what happened in your sister's
case..
