Its been around a little while, we're using it on our project for PDF
generation for a desktop application and a web application (Shared
engine).

It's pretty powerful (For something thats free), there is a pretty
good report designer and it has lots of functionality for working with
SQL data sources and crunching data/graphing etc.

Beware of the XML datasource stuff though, most all of the examples on
using BIRT use SQL as a datasource and the features available for SQL
don't match those for XML (you can't pass parameters into a XML
datasource).

It also has some large runtime requirements of between 10 to 30MB or
so, (its not entirely clear what you need to use). And you can embed
either its report viewer as a web app with additional features
available, or just use the engine to go straight to PDF/Doc/XLS etc.

There are two books on the topic, 'A field guide to reporting' and one
about deployment, they are well worth buying.
