But is that worth selling your souls to the American overlords?

Germany has been adopting Halloween in recent years, too. Somehow it
primarily feels just like a justification for more consumption of
useless merchandise -- after all we already have Karneval (see
http://images.google.com.au/images?q=rosenmontag&btnG=Search+Images --
another event based mostly on pagan tradition). Similarly we nowadays
get Santa Claus delivering Christmas presents, while the German
tradition has the "Christkind" ("christ-child").

Not that I'm against change, but the American cultural imperialism was
getting a bit scary -- particularly since it was largely based on
utter ignorance. Fortunately Bush saved us: the general opinion on
American culture isn't as high anymore as it used to be, so American
ideas face more resistance than a few years ago.

OTOH: hardly any reason is bad enough not to justify a party :-)
