Why is Twitter worth anything? I can totally understand why people ask that question. It's like this, right? --> http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/4/23/
To me, it's community. I know the basic idea sounds stupid but as I mentioned above, I went to Twitter because of a groups of people I already "knew" through a web forum. I try to follow people to (a) I "know" (b) who interest me (c) who are funny (d) other reasons. The people I "know" from the forum led me to a bunch of people in my home town (Melbourne, Australia) who meet ITRW for drinks and socials. Kinda scary for me, but fun. People who interest me include, e.g., The Posse, so's I can get a (really really minor) handle on what they're about. In truth, Joe's the only one tweets regularly, so Dick and Carl are still a bit of a mystery. Other "people" who interest me include: @netbeans, @wso2, @funkatron, etc. People who are funny: see also http://textism.com/favrd/. Your tweets can be "favourited" -- any tweets faved 3 or more times end up on Favrd. It's not all Gold, but there's some funny stuff there. Other reaons: well, they're there. Look, when first I started I felt like I was shouting out loud from a rooftop -- pointless, no-one to hear me. Who gives a crap what I had for lunch?? But someone replied: "from rooftop to rooftop, we build this place." Might mean nothing to most but it meant a lot to me. People DO listen. And sometimes they reply, they advise, they comfort, the entertain. You'll never get it if you don't try. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
