If you were google or facebook, what would be the 'win' for writing a Java
uploader at this point in time? To say that you've got one? To make people
choose between the two? To have to write extra code to detect and choose a
'best' one? To write more code to remember which uploader a person chose
last time? To have to write more FAQs for people about how to get a recent
Java installed on their system?

All of this extra work and parrallel versions to satisfy the few % of the
userbase not willing or able to run a relatively current Flash version? I'm
really not seeing what's in it for them.

Google and Facebook - matter little in this race, I think. Far more
valuable would be for Sun to try to work with people to get a JavaFX SDK
tailored for Salesforce.com. Get people in the business world used to
seeing and using Java apps (again?) and tap in to that huge business
ecosystem. Flash/Flex is already playing there quite strongly. That's
where JavaFX *could* make a significant impact, not on general public
sites. Even there, they'd need to have a compelling story over and above
what Flex offers, and I'm not sure they'd have one today.
