Hi! The G1 works just fine in european GSM- and UMTS-Networks. Its available in some countries of europe. For instance in Germany and UK.
Though I would recommend getting the ADP1 (Android Dev Phone 1) from google directly. It has the same Hardware but it's not locked to t-mobile, you can flash images that you build yourself and you can get root without a problem. And its got this nice drawing on the backcover: http://tinyurl.com/dx8wmq There is one drawback though: You cannot install copy protected apps from the market.
