I've also written Java desktop apps in the past, and it seems to me that the
main thing holding back a lot of Java developers from releasing on Linux is
that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to create the packages needed by
different distros.  It would be useful to have an Ant plugin, or Maven goal
that would create an RPM or deb file for your project (and hopefully upload
it to the appropriate repository).

Maybe the Java app store will be the solution to dealing with the different
packaging formats, and we'll be able to use webstart to distribute
everywhere.
