I may be way off in the weeds here -but if you aren't actually
working on a JVM language, is it really appropriate to turn up?

It would be a shame if John Rose missed an opportunity to chat with
Neal Gafter, cause I was trying to get him to autograph my mouse-pad -
if you see what I mean.

I would love to go -what's not to love about a small conference with
that kind of talent, talking dirty about languages? In all honesty,
if it weren't for the small matter of flying across the world I
probably would go -but I would feel compelled to have a crack at some
kind of jvm compiler first

Instead: Stay home and watch the videos, (over and over and over) -
this way you get to pause the video while you take a quick refresher
on polymorphic inline caches.

When you are done, watch the videos from Microsoft's reciprocal
conference; lang.net (two excellent 2009 videos with john rose for
example). These summits bring to mind accounts of ww1 soldiers at
christmas coming out of the trenches and playing football with "the
enemy".

Note also (from http://openjdk.java.net/projects/mlvm/jvmlangsummit/)
the following:

>>Space is limited: This summit is organized around a single classroom-style
>>room, to support direct communication between participants. There will be a
>>mix of presentations of various lengths. We have reserved Sun’s largest
>>conference room, which seats up to 90. If the available space fills up,
>>presenters and implementors will be given priority.<<

a bigger party is not always a better party (in fact -beyond a pretty
low threshold a bigger party is almost never a better party) . The
nice thing about this party is that if you want to put in the work,
you can go.

-yes yes, i concede that the posse should get a couple of press-
passes.
