While it was fun to follow the mailing-lists, I'm not really convinced
language design benefit from this approach, with no real expert/design
team apart from experts chiming in on each their area of interest.

Yes which since led people to more than ever consider Java stale. I
mean, the community obviously wanted something that could spark some
life, productivity and fun into Java again <http://tech.puredanger.com/
java7>. So I think it's only natural if some are disappointed with
this JDK7 iteration.
