I don't really understand/agree that Scala is Java NG, Java was all
about the lowest common denominator and mainstreamability. In that
perspective, Fan appears much more interesting. It's a couple of years
behind in exposure but fortunately tooling is coming along rather
nicely. A Devoxx presentation sounds like an awesome event.
