Thats odd - I've always just downloaded the .dmg, dragged Maia (or whatever IDEA version ) to my Applications directory and double clicked. NEVER had a problem (apart from when a plugin has caused issues or the build itself was broken beyond 'startup' issues).
As for the community release - you could certainly go a far way without needing the ultimate stuff, not everyone uses JPA/Hibernate, some people do restful stuff, some people might do hard core weird stuff thats got nothing to do with J2EE.. Still, going with ultimate is a no brainer for any professional developer IMHO. -- Pull me down under...
