For extra points he could put traces of explosive compounds in it, something with lots of nitrogen. That way he really won't lose it when they ask him for his passport.
Of course when they ask why he has a radioactive passport with traces of explosives, if he lets them know he writes scala for a living, there will be a knowing nod and let him on his way.
