Hi Mark Not sure which netbook you have specifically, but a friend of mine was having similar problems with his 12" netbook - one of the new EEEPCs. It seems that the new wifi chip in there is very new indeed, and will work with the NDIS wrappers (but they unfortunately don't resume properly). The best bet is to get on the support sites, or just wait a little longer - the volunteers do catch up with the latest, greatest hardware much quicker now.
As for the NBR of ubuntu, it is really good. On the EEEPC 1000 it works flawlessly (no bleeding edge hardware that is unsupported), and the result is extremely nice to use. Glad you like it.
