Maarten,

I'm glad Joe stated his opinion its an important reminder that
business matters. Its easy to get lost in the technology side of
things and forget about the bottom line. Under the current laws the
companies have every right to bring suit. They should do what they
feel is necessary to maintain their business advantage and protect
their IP.

Yes the current system doesn't work as well as it could. Joe said
that at least the terms were too long. I think the goals of the patent
system was to protect innovation and the research I've seen says that
software pattens stifle innovation more than encourage it. I don't
what the answer is. The whole gene patent thing certainly smelled
afoul. A gene is something that occurs naturally and patenting it is
like patenting the fact that Canada is north of the US.

Also regarding his Apple bias, I don't think its such a problem. He
goes out of his way to say he is biased before just about every
statement he makes.
