After listening to the latest newscast (I'm always a bit behind these days),
I thought I'd jump in with a couple of quick points to clarify things (as an
iPad owner in .au):

   1. Apple is definitely blocking non-US iTunes accounts from getting
first-party iPad apps, including the free iBooks. Pretending this is about
book store regions is disingenuous, as they could easily allow you to
download it for reading your own ePub content. I use it for my Pragmatic
   titles.
   2. They're also definitely blocking all non-US accounts from the
on-device app store, but not the on-device media store.
   3. You can buy apps with your non-US iTunes account just fine from within
the iTunes desktop app, and they work fine on the device. Just not Apple's
apps. You can get iPad-only apps as well, so long as they're from
   third-parties.
   4. You can also set up a dummy US account and buy apps (even from the
device) using US iTunes gift cards from eBay.

Cheers,

Josh
