The service that was recommended was crashplan.

I did try to use it without paying for the online service.  It has a
fundamental flaw when you decide to backup to your friends in which
you can span your data over multiple destination.  Let's say you have
30gb of data to backup with 3 friends volunteering 10gb each.  With
crashplan, you will be left with 3 destination with backup fail at 33%
over 3 destinations.
