While Apple nearly kicked the bucket, and yes, it was the iPod that saved them: I don't think the Mac could have been successful until now. 10 years ago it wasn't about the web, "open standards" and multi- platform apps. It was all about MS Office and Desktop apps. The web and software ecosystem can now support the Mac. And Apple have leveraged the development of hardware that Windows (for good or for bad) has driven. Not saying this is good nor bad, just an observation.
