Yup, Microsoft is just sorta cruising along on existing inertia trying
to minimize drag, while Apple continues to ignite new booster stages
of their rocket. However that's purely from a gadget viewpoint, if you
look at development tools and technologies (which we should be
concerned with in a programming language forum like this one) it's
quite a different story. Microsoft actually does succeed in giving
their developers state-of-the-art stuff (and why Neal Gafter etc. went
there).

Perhaps Apple recognizes this and that's why apparently Ballmer will
join Jobs on stage at WWDC:
