I cannot count how many times I've heard (and participated to) this
kind of discussion in the last years. What always surprise me is that
it often looks more similar to a religious or at least ideological
discussion than a technical one. Could please somebody explain me why?

My personal opinion (derived from what I saw with my colleagues and
friends) is that one is against FP often because he doesn't understand
its advantages and why it matters. I believe that this article is one
of the best introduction to FP:

http://www.defmacro.org/ramblings/fp.html

Of course I don't want to give up to all the benefits of OOP, but I
don't think anybody is asking that. Scala is the demonstration of how
is possible to take the best of both these programming paradigms. So
why shouldn't we try to do the same in Java?

My 2 cents
