The point is that too many things are happening inside the VM, and unless you're really a super expert (which means: you are Kirk Pepperdine, one of the guys who write the C code inside the VM or at least one who is able to read it) my impression is that any knowledge about it is at least partially wrong or obsolete. Really, the least risky strategy is to benchmark appropriately on a real world scenario. Do that.
