I'm amused that you call this ascii art. I would agree that it might get tedious if I had to do the spaces by hand, but even the example I showed is the default indentation of IDEA. I think it is the same for Eclipse, don't have it to check right off.
As for the merging concern.... any merge tool can be set to ignore whitespace, if you want. Or... better yet, just merge the differences for you. :) Having the arguments split like this allows you to very easily merge two branches where one removed an argument and one added.
