I agree, I think it's something that is very specific to Silicon Valley,
although it probably applies to a lesser extent to big cities as well.

The hunt for talent down here is absolutely ruthless and you definitely
don't need to be a stellar developer to land very big pays, although of
course, the cost of living is in proportion as well. You still come up ahead
in my experience.
