Strong leadership can come from a group managing open specifications (such as the ASF). They aren't mutually exclusive. I agree with the ASF position in leaving. If Java 6 were the last release, it would matter at least in the short- term. People would have to choose between the enormous libraries of solid code and using new technologies (see Perl 5). Would you like to use lambdas, or Hadoop?
