Actually, its HTML thats a bit disorganized. JavaScript is pretty universal across all browsers. If you allow ditching truly ancient stuff (IE 5.5, netscape 4), then its quite difficult to write javascript that works on one browser and not on another (well, as long as you stay away from HTML interaction, i.e. no DOM lookup / modification, no hooking into DOM-based events, etc).
