Google bought the Android startup in 2005 well before any iPhone
existed (launched in 2007) so the premise that Google wants to disrupt
Apple’s growing dominance seems like, at most, an afterthought by
Google. Also, it wasn't until 2008 I believe, that the concept of 3'rd
part applications in an app-store materialized, Steve Jobs originally
envisioned just being able to run apps inside Safari and so there
existed no real threat to Google - master of web applications and
online services.

Also, Apple/iPhone already IS the high-end of the marked, that's
almost the very definition of Apple (therefor the infamous "Apple
tax") modeled a bit after the Bang & Olufen's [http://www.bang-
olufsen.com/] old concept of design and user experience purity. Steve
Jobs has never gone after the mass marked as defined by other vendors
and I don't think it has ever been a prime objective of his.
