Hi Azu,
Not sure if you're a student or not (you don't say that you are) but
for students at least there's the google summer-of-code programme [1]
that has lots of project ideas.

Alternatively, there are always loads of open source projects looking
for volunteers. I know that Apache (where I lead up a project) has
many dozens of projects covering all sorts of areas, all of which are
always looking for contributors. The only thing to be aware of with
the Apache process is that you need to "earn your stripes" before
getting commit access, ie contribute patches, be involved on the
mailing list.

An alternative which Apache has recently started is the Apache Extras
site [2], being a semi-formal place for contributors without as much
process. So you might find some projects who are happy to let you
work on a related project through that mechanism. Certainly the one
that I'm involved with - Apache Isis [3] - is more than happy. You
can learn more about what we're about from an InfoQ interview [4] I
gave recently, so if it sounds of interest then do get in touch and
I'll gladly give you some ideas on projects you could work on with us
if you've got the time.

Cheers
Dan
