As regards the essay. You might be thinking of Sun Certified Java
Developer (or Oracle now presumably).

I have done this certification as well. It is quite different from the
SCJP in that SCJP is really just answering a bunch of multiple choice
questions for the most part on a computer.
The Developer exam involves a software specification where you have to
write an actual piece of software based on it. This one does have an
essay. I believe the main purpose of
the essay is to prove you wrote the software and didn't just get a
friend to do it. This essay is basically typing in answers to specific
questions about your project into a text area provided
in the same Prometric software used to take the Certified Java
Programmer exam. I envisaged being sat at an exam desk writing on a
bit of paper. Maybe it does work that way at some
test centres but it didn't at the one I used.

I was going to go for even more certification but after the Oracle
acquisition I lost my drive to do so.

I did wonder if I collected all 7 (I think it is 7) certifications and
collected 50 rings whether it would allow me to turn into Super Java
Geek and have special powers. Now with a bit more experience I can see
how that might not actually work.

There is a lot of debate about the value of Certification. It cost a
lot of money and I honestly don't know how recognised it is. I can say
for certain that the process of having to pass the exams rounded out
my skills and forced me to become familiar with parts of Java which I
had not needed to use in my work. It is also surprising the things you
think you understand until you are asked awkward edge case questions.
