These days Java is mainly used for making web apps, Android apps, libraries for other Java programs, command-line utilities, and to a lesser extent desktop apps like Eclipse and Vuze. You might want to decide which of those arenas excites you enough to finish a working program that does something useful. Then you'll start accumulating certain peripheral skills out of necessity to get your vision to come to life.
