Java the Flash-like web plugin is dead in terms of mass market consumer adoption along with Silverlight. I don't see either of those making a come back. Both still have a life in terms of niche use workstation apps and limited market stuff. For games devlopment outside of Android (which I consider mostly in the Java eocsystem), Java is dead, Minecraft aside. The JVM could potentially be a great fit for PC game development. But the 3D APIs are a mess, and the issue of deploying JVM software to consumers is still a mess.
